Inlay, onlay, or overlay fillings are employed when deep decay or damage has compromised the integrity of the tooth's crown. Traditional fillings may not suffice due to extensive damage. These fillings are securely bonded to the tooth's surface, offering both structural reinforcement and aesthetic improvement. They are a cost-effective alternative to crowns, preserving dental tissue while providing durable restoration.

What is the difference between individual fillings?

An overlay is a filling that covers the entire chewing surface of the tooth, as well as its edges. It is suitable for extensive damages, when it is necessary to restore not only the upper part of the tooth, but also its sides.

Unlike overlay and onlay fillings, an inlay is placed only inside the tooth, i.e. it is not applied to the edges of the tooth. This type of filling is used to restore smaller damages that are not so serious.

Onlay combines the features of overlay and inlay. This filling covers part of the chewing surface as well as the edges of the tooth. Onlay is ideal for moderate damage, where it is not necessary to cover the entire surface of the tooth, nor is it limited to only the inner part.

Which type of filling is needed to repair your tooth is decided by the dental specialist who chooses the most suitable solution. The treatment is painless using local anesthesia.
