Why zirconia crowns?
The answer to why you should choose zirconia crowns over other options becomes clear at first glance at the restored teeth. If the dentist has done the work well, you will not see any difference between the restored tooth and the healthy teeth around it. Zirconia crowns are the ones that, thanks to their material, blend in with the rest of the teeth and look perfectly natural and aesthetic. Zirconia crowns are usually the first choice for restoring front teeth.
The adaptability of zirconia crowns is not only about their appearance and how well they blend in with the other teeth. They quickly adapt to the tooth they are placed on and soon reach their original hardness and resistance. Zirconia crowns are very strong and durable, so they can fully replace the repaired parts of the teeth.
Teeth are constantly exposed to many external influences, which can quickly cause corrosion of restorations and other materials in the mouth. Zirconia is becoming increasingly popular because it does not corrode, so restorations made of it never need to be replaced because of rust. Hand in hand with this property goes the fact that zirconia crowns last a very long time.
Metal-ceramic crowns have proved to be a problematic choice because the metal in them caused allergic reactions. Zirconia crowns contain no metal in any form. They are therefore a healthier type of dental restoration.
How are teeth restored?
Before the final crown is placed on the damaged area, a few procedures come first. First of all, before the crown restoration you need a dental hygiene appointment. When the teeth are carefully cleaned, it is easier to match the right shade of the restoration, which you will discuss with your dentist. Next, the damaged area is prepared (ground down). Right after that, a temporary crown is placed (often made of resin) to fill the damaged area until the final custom-made crown is produced in our laboratory. The time needed to make it varies – it can take several days or weeks, but with the available technology it can also be made while you wait.
The lifespan of a crown can be affected by several factors, the most important of which is how you care for your teeth. Discuss this with your dentist. If you choose zirconia crowns and look after them carefully, they can serve you for up to 20 years.
Teeth never rest, so they need the best possible care. Damage is hard to avoid, and once it happens, it should be prevented in the future. Zirconia crowns are an investment in proven, functional quality that you will certainly not regret.
